Atlas Restaurant Group will bring some French flair to the Bagby Furniture building in Harbor East next year.
The restaurant group unveiled its latest concept, a French brasserie and dinner theater called Monarque, on Friday. The 135-seat restaurant will hearken back to a bygone Paris with tin ceilings, leather banquettes and a stage hung with burgundy curtains.
Construction on the project, designed by Patrick Sutton, has already begun and is slated to be complete in time for an opening in late winter 2020.
The eatery will join three other Atlas properties — Tagliata, the Elk Room and Italian Disco — on the same block of Fleet Street. Monarque is named after the monarch butterfly, in a reference to the historic brick factory building’s metamorphosis into an entertainment hub, the restaurant group said in a news release.
“With Monarque, we are adding a new type of international cuisine to our portfolio of restaurants while providing Baltimore with another new and exciting dining experience unlike anything else that exists in the city,” Atlas Restaurant Group CEO Alex Smith said in a statement. “We have transformed the Bagby building into an Atlas entertainment district with four very unique concepts, which will become a destination for locals and tourists alike.”
The restaurant’s entrance will be marked by an illuminated marquee in the Bagby Furniture Co. courtyard. In addition to the main dining room, Monarque will also have a bar and a private dining space with 20 seats.
The stage will host nightly performances, ranging from comedy shows to jazz concerts and poetry readings, according to the release.
Monarque will be Atlas’ fourteenth Baltimore concept. The restaurant group’s portfolio of properties includes the Bygone, Ouzo Bay, Loch Bar, Azumi and the recently opened Choptank. A new Latin American-inspired eatery, Maximón, is slated to open next month, and a crab house in Federal Hill’s Cross Street Market will follow next year.
